Digital Painting Techniques: Practical Techniques of Digital Art Masters (Digital Art Masters Series) offers techniques in getting started to the novice digital painter. By using this book, you will begin to understand where digital art can take you within the painting world.

What’s inside

Creating Custom Brushes

Inside Digital Painting Techniques: Practical Techniques of Digital Art Masters (Digital Art Masters Series) Volume 1 you will find detailed instructions on how to create your own custom brushes.  They show you how you can take a piece of a picture and turn it into a grunge brush for your paintings.  They help you understand how to make custom brushes within Adobe Photoshop.  This book is older and uses an older version of Adobe Photoshop, but it’s still very useful and I still use the tutorials to this day.

Speed Painting

There is also instruction on how to do a speed painting.  Some really beautiful art comes out of speed painting.  It’s nice to have that know how so that if you’ve got something in your head you can quickly paint it out, then go back and put in the finer details.  They teach you some of the techniques with speed painting so that you are well on your way to understanding how to create your masterpieces at a quick pace.

Knowing how to speed paint is really beneficial if you’ve got a lot of ideas in your head and you just want to get them down onto paper quickly.  You can always come back and put in the finer details later if that’s what you want to do.  But, many speed painters publish their art just as is and it’s still really beautiful!

Matte Painting

Matte painting is an environment painting that is used in film or media.  It’s a set that is painted that either depicts a real place or a fantasy place that is not available at a filming location.  Such as the warehouse in the movie Raiders of the Lost Arc.  That warehouse was painted on glass.  Who’da’thunk?  Kinda cool stuff.  The artists were so good, that I hadn’t known that for years!  And that’s one of my favorite movies that gets watched a few times a year!

Here are a couple of examples of digital matte paintings by Marta Nael:

Creatures

Now we get into some organic painting tips and tricks.  This section runs you through some fur basics and how to create and make a fantasy creature look real.  They go through different styles of creating creatures of different kinds, whether it’s fantasy or real.  There is a section that goes through creating creature’s eyes.  And one for creating fur.  This is a great section if you love painting animals and creatures.

Humans

This is also one of my favorite sections in the book.  It goes through the facial features of humans and how to create them.  I love painting eyes and this was really helpful in getting a better understanding of how to make my eyes look more realistic.  I also came to a better understanding of how to create and paint better looking eyes that stood out more.  As I went through this section I really had a much better understanding and appreciation of the facial features of humans.

Environment Painting

Environment painting is the painting of environments.  These paintings, as with matte paintings, can be either fantasy or of a real place.  I love environment painting!  It’s like reading a good book.  When you find an environment painting that catches your attention, it takes you to that place.

Here is a little speed painting video on digital painting environments:

I love how he flips his canvas constantly to get a better understanding and view of what it is he wants to do with the painting.

Best defined by the artist Benjamin Truitt who states, “Environmental art, or eco-art, is best defined as a roof under which live many different art styles, techniques, and objectives. Just as a house is made up of different rooms that make one dwelling, environmental art is made up of various artists who share a common belief about the world: interconnectedness. While individual pieces may seem to share no similarities – some are dark and horrifying, some are beautiful and grand, and some are, well, weird – these artists all seek to show the importance of our interconnectedness to the natural world.”

What a beautiful statement and how totally true!

Sci-fi and Fantasy

In this section you will learn how to create realistic looking armor, getting the rust and shine on the pieces just right.

You will also learn a little bit about space art and creating stars and planets.

Complete Projects

This section takes you through three different works of instructions on how to do a complete project from start to finish.

Gallery

This last section is one of my favorites.  They included a gallery of artists works to showcase some of their artwork.  When I struggle with motivation I like to turn to this section of the book.  It contains tons of artwork.

My personal favorite is Daarken’s Poised.  I love the detail he puts into his works.  And I love the feeling he puts into it.  A bonus on why I love his paintings is that he uses Adobe Photoshop!  Whoohoo!  That is right up my alley and something I know I can do!

What’s your favorite?

I love environment and portrait art.  I also have a soft spot in my heart for underwater art.  Oh, and I also really love fantasy and sci-fi art.  Okay, I LOVE art!

This book Digital Painting Techniques: Practical Techniques of Digital Art Masters (Digital Art Masters Series) Volume 1  has been so helpful to me in learning how to make my art better.  I’ve had this book for a few years and have often turned to it for guidance with my art.

What is your favorite kind of art?  How about your favorite artist?  Please share your thoughts in the comments below!  And thank you so much for visiting!
